I don’t just study writing. I also use writing to try to create art, putting words together in ways that strike me as beautiful and that make me feel more human.
My creative work has appeared on the web in Tin House and is coming soon in Writing on the Edge, where it won the 2018 Donald Murray Prize for creative nonfiction.
I am currently revising a memoir called Fieldwork. It’s about how in 2014, newly divorced and accompanied by my five-year-old daughter, I returned to the former Soviet country of Latvia, where 15 years earlier as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I met my (ex) husband. I planned the trip to carry out anthropological field research that would secure my position as a tenured professor. But really, unmoored from the immigrant community of my upbringing and wrecked from my divorce, I was crossing languages and cultures in search of home.
